Junior Leadership Marshall Learns about Industry in Marshall County

The 2011-2012 class of Junior Leadership Marshall nears its graduation date of April 4 by continuing to learn about local and state agencies including a recent tour of local industry.

The class of 35 seniors from MCHS, Forrest and Cornersville were treated to a tour of two industrial facilities in the Lewisburg Industrial Park on January 18 including Southern Carton and Calsonic Kansei of North America (CKNA).

The Lewisburg Gas Department served as breakfast and luncheon host for the class of future leaders of Marshall County before the group was met by Southern Carton President Dave Kennedy. Kennedy gave a thorough tour of the Southern Carton facility detailing how the business began and what challenges it faces moving forward in the new business and industry global economy. The students saw box manufacturing up close and learned what it takes to run a major industry in Lewisburg.

The class next visited Calsonic Kansei of North America where Dickie Archer and a group of CKNA officials focused on education and training. Archer outlined the importance of educated and trained associates in developing and growing a global automotive supply company from America in the face of challenges from other countries including China, India and Brazil. The students were then given a tour of the facility and saw how CKNA produces quality interior automotive parts for major automotive manufacturers including Nissan. Many of the students were amazed at the amount of new technologies being utilized by CKNA to manufacture the parts and to compete in the global market.

Finally, the class sat down for a luncheon where they were taught proper dining etiquette by adult Leadership Marshall Director Lynda Potts and local caterer Sharon Deitz. The students learned how important it is for each of them to take advantage of the education and training opportunities afforded them in high school, and soon at the college level; so that each will be able to compete in the future workforce that has become a global endeavor. The students were taught that each of them should think of himself or herself as a business and a product to be marketed to the companies of their futures.

Brandon Talks ECD with Rotary

Recent recipient of the Tennessee Economic Development Council Lifetime Membership Award, Joe B. Brandon, recently presented a program to the Lewisburg Rotary Club on economic development in Lewisburg and Marshall County.

Brandon’s dedication to Tennessee’s economic strength is exemplified in his many roles in economic development throughout his career. He has served at the State of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, where he introduced the Retention and Expansion (R&E) program. Also deeply involved in economic development on the local level, Brandon served on Lewisburg’s first Industrial Development Board and as a County Commissioner. He is a dedicated, long-time member of TEDC, having served as Middle Tennessee Director and, for a decade, as principle fundraiser.

Brandon gave the Lewisburg Rotary an overview of the challenges in economic development facing Lewisburg and the region, but he also outlined some of the positives he sees as building blocks on which Lewisburg and Marshall County can grow and strive. Lewisburg’s location, its rich tradition in industry and its focus on business expansion and retention as well as new industry recruitment programs Brandon believes are strong points Lewisburg can use to market the community in the new age of economic development.

Workforce and Education Summit

The availability of a skilled, educated and flexible workforce is a key component of Economic Development. To address this issue, the Lewisburg ECD called a Workforce and Education Summit on Dec. 1, 2011 at Columbia State Community College-Lewisburg Campus.
The W&E Summit brought together industry leaders with education and training agencies from the region including Columbia State Community College, Martin Methodist College, the TN Dept. of Labor and Workforce, the South Central TN Workforce Alliance, the Tennessee Career Center, the Marshall County School System, Spot Lowe CTE Center, Marshall Co. Adult Education and the State Department of Economic and Community Development.
Leaders of local industry discussed the issues they are facing with the workforce in Marshall County and the skills they need or will need in the future from their workforce. The educators and training agencies described what each currently offers in the way of industrial training and education certification and came away with a clearer understanding of what training and education opportunities they can pursue for the future.
Topics ranged from advanced manufacturing skills and specific mechanical skills to basic, soft and personal skill developing. Leadership and Team-building were skills leaders of local industry wanted to see more in the local workforce.
All of the information from the meeting was compiled and distributed to the participants and a future meeting is scheduled for the first quarter of 2012 in order to further investigate the crucial link between industry and education/training for Marshall County. The goal is to maintain this open line of communication between the sectors and strengthen the development of workforce skill, education and training for Marshall County.

Workforce Development in Lewisburg

As workforce issues continue to arise in the manufacturing sector of the United States, Lewisburg is taking steps to insure our workforce has the skills needed by any and all manufacturers.

Recent estimates show that 600,000 manufacturing jobs in the U.S. are going unfilled due to a lack of an adequately skilled workforce. In Lewisburg, the Economic Development Department is joining forces with its existing industry leaders and every educational and training facility in the region to develop a dialogue and subsequently a curriculum that will create a stronger and better skilled workforce for the present and future manufacturers in Lewisburg.

Calsonic Kansei of North America has begun a presentation for middle and high schools students across Marshall County to explain theneeds of manufacturers for skilled and dedicated employees. Dickie Archer, Global CKPS Manager for CKNA, and his team have been holding frank discussions with area students to outline the necessity of post-secondary education.

“Graduating from high school simply isn’t good enough anymore,” Archer said. “You need to seek a college degree, a vocational certification or military training when you graduate in order to compete for the jobs in manufacturing today.”

While that message is getting to the students in Lewisburg and Marshall County, Greg Lowe, Director of Economic Development for the City of Lewisburg, is convening a Workforce and Education Summit on December 1 with industry leaders, Columbia State Community College, Tennessee Technology Center, Tennessee Career Center, Spot Lowe Career Technical Education Center, Marshall County Adult Education, Marshall County High School, Forrest High School, Cornersville High School, Tennessee Department of Labor, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance and University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services.

The goal of the summit is to let industry leaders describe in detail their workforce needs presently and projected needs for the future in order for the educational and training agencies to develop a curriculum and/or programs to help meet those needs.

“We believe there are already educational and training opportunities available that are not known or not properly understood by industries and prospective workers,” Lowe said. “We also believe there are new educational and training opportunities that can be created by developing a better line of communication between industries, the educational and training institutions and the agencies that support them both.

“Lewisburg has long enjoyed a strong industrial base and we want to continue to be a home to manufacturing. We can do this by making sure we have the skilled workforce that manufacturing needs, now and going forward in the future.”

As the summer heat winds its way toward fall, it is time once again to be thinking about the upcoming Goats, Music and More Festival and the Battle at Rock Creek.
The 3rd Annual Battle at Rock Creek battle of the bands competition takes the stage at Rock Creek Park on September 17 at 6:00 p.m. with four bands competing for a shot at claiming the title of the best band in Southern Middle Tennessee.
This year’s Battle at Rock Creek brings 10 bands to the stage for three Saturday nights beginning September 10 and continuing with three more bands each Saturday night ending September 24.
The winners will advance to the Semifinals on Thursday, October 6 at Rock Creek Park where the final four bands will compete for the chance to perform in the Finals on Friday, October 7 as the opening act for Country Music Superstar Lorrie Morgan.
This Saturday, four bands will take the stage to entertain and compete including Bad Habits, South of Somewhere and Theophilus. The bands’ music will feature country, rock and Christian rock and is sure to be another entertaining night of free live music.

The festival that began in honor of those famous fainting goats of Marshall County returns for its 9th year at Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg, TN and this year’s lineup of goat shows, musical entertainment and activities for the whole family promises to draw crowds from all across the nation and beyond.
The Goats, Music and More Festival has been honored by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event for October twice with its unique southern flavor, top-notch free musical entertainment, goat shows that celebrate fainting and Boer goats, barbecue, food of every description, arts and crafts and kids games and activities.
Coming to the stage this year will be more of the top-named acts that has made the festival such a hit with fans. On Friday night, Lorrie Morgan graces the Rock Creek Park stage delivering some of her famous country hits that helped her to sell over 6 million records world-wide. Stay tuned for the next big act to headline Saturday night at the Goats, Music and More Festival.

Hawk Converting To Begin Operating in Summer 2011

March 10, 2011 - Hawk Converting recently announced their new venture at a Lewisburg City Council meeting where they were rewarded with a payment in lieu of taxes program on their capital investment. Hawk Converting will take a capital investment of just over $1 million in real estate and equipment and expects to employ 30 new hires over the next 2 to 5 years.

Hawk Converting was established in 2010 to fulfill a vision to provide a converting solution in the Southeastern United States that isn't currently available in all areas. The company will specialize in the paper converting business with a focus on projects tied to offset, flexo and digital printing. It will give owners Re Hawkins Kelso and Kathryn Hawkins the opportunity to build an organization from the ground up with services that will compliment their printing knowledge and experience.

“Overall, our company can be characterized as a provider of various finishing, packaging and fulfillment solutions. By the year 2013 Hawk Converting could emerge as the leader in the deployment of converting solutions, specifically targeting the packaging market where there is a need to reduce waste tied to paper.” said Mrs. Kelso.

“Lewisburg Printing is a local success story at its best,” said Lewisburg Director of Economic Development Greg Lowe. “From the newspaper business to the printing business, the Hawkins family has been an industry and community leader in Lewisburg and we are happy to assist them with their newest venture.”

The Lewisburg Economic Development Office began working with Hawk Converting several weeks ago along with the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance, the South Central Development District, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Lewisburg Electric System and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Together, a plan of incentives and programs were put in place to help Hawk Converting expand their business.
Currently, Kelso and Hawkins are negotiating terms to acquire a new building in Lewisburg for Hawk Converting. With training for new employees, Hawk Converting hopes to be up and running by the end of summer or sooner.

“Thanks to everyone at the City of Lewisburg and the other state and regional agencies for helping us start what we believe will be a new and exciting business opportunity for us.” said Mrs. Hawkins.

Career Corner Added to Marshall Co. Library

In an effort to extend the outreach of the Tennessee Career Center, the Marshall County Memorial Library and the TN Career Center in Lewisburg have established a "Career Corner" in the library. The Career Corner will be manned from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday and 11:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, to give job seekers instruction on Resume/Cover Letter Writing, Job Search Methods, and other Career Center resources. RockTenn to Acquire Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. Creating a $9 Billion Leader in the North American Paperboard Packaging Market

RockTenn (NYSE:RKT) and Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (NYSE:SSCC) today announced that the Boards of Directors of both companies have approved a definitive agreement under which Smurfit-Stone will become a wholly owned subsidiary of RockTenn. The aggregate consideration, consisting of 50% cash and 50% RockTenn stock, is valued at $35 per-share of Smurfit-Stone common stock, and represents a 27% premium to Smurfit-Stone's closing stock price on January 21, 2011. The aggregate equity value of the transaction, based on the closing price of RockTenn's common stock on January 21, 2011, is approximately $3.5 billion.
This strategic transaction, unanimously approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies, will create a $9 billion leader in the North American paperboard packaging market. Upon closing, RockTenn will maintain its headquarters in Norcross, GA.

Transaction Summary
Smurfit-Stone will become a wholly owned subsidiary of RockTenn. For each share of Smurfit-Stone common stock, Smurfit-Stone stockholders will be entitled to receive 0.30605 shares of RockTenn common stock and $17.50 in cash, representing 50% cash and 50% stock. The aggregate consideration is $35 per Smurfit-Stone common share. The consideration represents a 27% premium to Smurfit-Stone's closing stock price on January 21, 2011.
The aggregate purchase price being paid for Smurfit-Stone's equity in the transaction is approximately $3.5 billion, consisting of approximately $1.8 billion of cash and the issuance of 30.9 million shares of RockTenn common stock. Following the acquisition, RockTenn shareholders will own approximately 56% and Smurfit-Stone shareholders will own 44% of the combined company.
In addition to the equity consideration, RockTenn will assume Smurfit-Stone's net debt and pension liabilities. As of December 31, 2010 Smurfit-Stone's net debt was $0.7 billion and its pension liabilities were $1.1 billion ($0.7 billion after-tax). RockTenn has received $3.7 billion in committed bank financing from Wells Fargo Bank N.A., Rabobank and SunTrust Bank to finance the cash portion of the transaction, to refinance existing debt and to provide liquidity for the combined operations.
The purchase price, including Smurfit-Stone's net debt and after-tax pension liability as of December 31, 2010, represents a multiple of 6.1x Smurfit-Stone's annualized adjusted EBITDA of $820 million for the three months ended December 31, 2010.
The transaction is expected to close in the second calendar quarter of 2011 and is subject to customary closing conditions, regulatory approvals, as well as approval by both RockTenn and Smurfit-Stone stockholders.

Ace Bayou to Add Jobs in Lewisburg

For fifteen years, Ace Bayou has been putting people to work in Marshall County and thanks to a new expansion project the company will be adding even more employees to its manufacturing base in Lewisburg.
Ace Bayou manufactured over 1 million bean bags in 2010 but has also made a hit with its game chairs – seats for people to use while playing video games. Along with its pet furniture manufacturing operation, ABC Pets, and Radiation Protection Products that manufactures a full line of radiation shielding, nuclear shielding and industrial lead products, Ace Bayou is extending its operations with a new project that is expected to create 100 jobs in Lewisburg.
Details of the new product line will be announced soon but the new project has the company in the process of purchasing the Sanford Building in Lewisburg, a 227,000 square foot facility located just off Ellington Parkway.
“We are just thrilled with the prospect of this new project by Ace Bayou,” said Greg Lowe, Lewisburg Director of Economic Development. “Ace Bayou has been a great manufacturer in Marshall County and this shows their commitment to this community and its workforce potential.”
Ace Bayou is expected to hire at least 100 new workers for this project and is projecting that number to grow throughout 2011 and into 2012. This could more than double its current workforce.
“We think it’s good news for the county,” said “Greg Hykes, Ace Bayou General Manager. “We appreciate the help and support of the Lewisburg Industrial Development Board and the Lewisburg City Council during this process.”
Marshall County has experienced high unemployment rates in the past several months and welcomes the prospect of putting more people to work.
“Existing industry has always been the creator of jobs for communities and I hope this is a sign of more positive news to come for Marshall County,” Lowe said. “We have a Council and an Industrial Development Board with the experience and the commitment to move us forward. And by continuing to work with the State of Tennessee Department of Economic Development, the Marshall County JECDB and agencies such as the South Central Tennessee Development District, the South Central Tennessee Workforce Board, USDA Rural Development and TVA, I believe we will see positive things happening in Lewisburg and Marshall County in the coming months.”
Ace Bayou is still in the process of working out the details of its new project including the purchase of the Sanford building but hopes are that the plant will be up and operating by this spring.

Lewisburg Welcomes New Industry - ALX Enterprises

A chemical engineer has opened in Lewisburg a business named after his grandson, Alex, to put the finishing touches on a product that, among other things, filters impurities from biodiesel fuel so it burns clean in those motors.
Rod Yawn, president and sole owner of ALX, moved his processing of tiny absorbent beads from Springfield, Tenn., to a blue metal building on North Fifth Avenue because, "I needed more space and a building more suited to the operation."
Marshall County's available workforce was another factor, as well as a couple of key people he named: Bubba Tankersley with his concrete company; and Bill Spence who has BDS Machine Inc.
"Good people," met through mutual acquaintances, and service from Lewisburg Gas Department and Lewisburg Electric Service, helped Yawn set up shop late last year, he said. Now he's got to hire more good people to meet customer demand.
"I'm hiring people now," Yawn said between the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
Industrial Staffing is the personnel agency he's been using for people he hires on a part-time basis until the employee is proved suited for the work.
About a dozen people work at ALX now, Yawn said. He anticipates a staff of 30. Experience with a forklift and the ability to work in an industrial environment are important qualifications for applicants who want employment at ALX.
"It's not easy work," Yawn said, "but this is a good place to work. Production and safety bonuses are paid and most companies don't do that."
His need is very real and immediate. ALX's operation has been 24-hours a day, seven days a week, "and we're not keeping up with the orders," Yawn said.
More work will be available when a bagging machine is delivered.
"The main part of the bottleneck is equipment," Yawn said. "I've got a bagger on order. I couldn't get it quick enough, so we made one out of wood."
ALX buys massive amounts of tiny beads. The beads are purchased from other companies with very expensive equipment, he said. Yawn doesn't give tours of his plant, and he protects the nature of his process. He says it's patented. His suppliers make the raw material for ALX and Yawn's plant finishes the product for his customers.
"One of the things that is allowing me to grow so fast," he said, "is people like Bill Spence. An industry can't operate without good suppliers."
Now, Yawn is shipping truckloads of his product by locally based trucking companies.
He plans to expand early this year with another building for the distribution part of his operation.
"Most of our market is domestic, but we're beginning to ship internationally," Yawn said.
One of his newest customers is in Japan. Another is in the Solomon Islands.
"We compete with Dow Chemical" and other companies that are not as well known, but "some of our products are unique in the world," he said.
One is the biodiesel business that makes fuel from yellow grease, cooking oil, leftover fat from poultry plants, and other such wastes. There's a washing process for the fuel that uses water, but it creates seven gallons of wastewater compared to Yawn's process to remove impurities that results in no wastewater.
It's a "dry wash resin," giving rise to a product name: DWR.
There are 175 biodiesel plants in the United States, he says. "Not all are my customers. Previously, all of them used water washing. There are a lot of plants in Europe. There's one in Costa Rica; a customer."
To clean biodiesel with Yawn's dry wash system, the beads are placed in a column -- a large pipe. Unwashed biodiesel is passed through the cleansing pipe and the beads absorb sodium hydroxide (a catalyst in the production of the fuel) and glycerin, a by-product of the process of making biodiesel.
A ton of beads can purify 375 gallons of biodiesel, Yawn says. This process is during the very last steps of making the fuel.
It also permits the use of a lower grade of the basic ingredient for biodiesel, he said.
Another use for products sold by ALX is absorption of pollution from ground water. Toxic metals, solvents, gasoline, dry cleaning fluids and the like, as well as some naturally occurring elements are removed with one of the products Yawn developed.
The product is used after toxic spills. It is also used in dairy farming. Arsenic, a naturally occurring element, was found in cows' milk. The arsenic was traced to well water in Wisconsin, and so that water is now filtered.
Yawn's beads are also used as a drilling lubricant. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has revealed some of the business of drilling, including the use of mud as a lubricant. But the mud contains other things and one of them is an ALX product.
"Much of the new natural gas that's being produced is from directional and horizontal drilling," Yawn said of how the business of drilling for petroleum products has changed. With a change in direction from straight down, to an angle and then a curve toward horizontal drilling, there was a need to reduce friction at the drill bit and the shaft.
As a result, there's a need for what Yawn makes, and he wants to make more and different products.
"I've got 20 other products in different stages of development," he said.
ALX was formed three years ago. It's been located in Springfield, but various reasons emerged for his move to Lewisburg. The Springfield operation is now just distribution.
Like some other corporate decisions, Yawn's decision to locate in Lewisburg was a result of various factors, but one of them was family. He lives in the Franklin-Williamson County area, and he has relatives living at Nashville, not the least of which is his grandson, Alex, of Brentwood.
Originally from Pascagoula, Miss., Yawn married at age 19, attended high school and college, Ol' Miss, with the love of his life and became an Ashland Oil Co. career man.
Over the decades, Yawn, who's in his late 50s, got to know people who are associates of his own business. Ashland Oil doesn't do what ALX does. He's retired from Ashland, and briefly worked in another company, but started his own that's now here in Lewisburg.
"I won't move my plant again," Yawn said.

Calsonic Kansei of North America Lewisburg Facility developed a program to help improve and maintain the look of the Lewisburg Industrial Park with a Roadside Clean Up project. On November 6, CKNA employees along with Marshall Co. Solid Waste Director Morgan Thomas and JECDB Director Mike Wiles collected trash from the roadside along Garrett Parkway and Industrial Drive.
The project displays CKNA’s commitment to Lewisburg and the Lewisburg Industrial Park and will be an ongoing project. The “crew” collected over 30 bags of trash and enjoyed a lunch provided by Waste Management in honor of the project to help keep the Lewisburg Industrial Park looking neat, clean and ready for business.

Department of Economic and Community Development's Tennessee Main Street
Program. Communities selected to participate in Tennessee Downtowns will
form a volunteer committee of local citizens who will participate in a
multi-month training curriculum supported by the National Main Street
Center. The curriculum is designed to teach citizens about
comprehensive, sustainable downtown revitalization and historic
preservation. The training includes attendance at a two-day downtown
revitalization workshop and a grant to complete individualized downtown
development projects.

The 12 selected communities are each home to downtown commercial
districts established at least 50 years ago and have demonstrated their
readiness to organize efforts for downtown revitalization based on the
successful "Main Street Four-Point Approach to Downtown
Revitalizationtm." The highly competitive selection process was
based on five core criteria: historic resources, need (economic and
physical), demonstrated local effort, overall presentation and
probability of success.

"Tennessee Downtowns will be a vital resource and a basis of support
for downtown revitalization efforts for the participating communities,"
said Rick Meredith, assistant commissioner for Community Development at
ECD. "I am confident that each community will see a strong return on
their investment of time and resources, and we look forward to being a
part of that investment."

Main Street revitalization is a comprehensive, incremental, self-help
economic strategy that also focuses on developing public-private
partnerships to enhance community livability and job creation, while
maintaining the historic character of the district. For information

Lowe Named Lewisburg ECD Director
Greg Lowe was named the Lewisburg Economic & Community Development Director for the City of Lewisburg beginning November 1, 2010.
Lowe has been Codes Enforcement Officer and Stormwater Coordinator for the City of Lewisburg for the past three years and worked with the ECD Office as an assistant. Before taking his position with the City of Lewisburg, Lowe was the Editor for the Marshall County Tribune, Lewisburg Gazette and the Marshall County Post.
â€œI am honored to be given this opportunity to help Lewisburg and Marshall County grow and prosper,â€ Lowe said.
Lowe plans to initiate and two-pronged approach for ECD in Lewisburgâ€”Business Retention & Expansion and Industrial Recruitment. Got Recycling? Join Lewisburg on America Recycles Day November 15

The City of Lewisburg is in its second year of its curbside recycling program and participation has been great but there are still people who are not taking part â€“ hereâ€™s your chance to begin.
â€œI Recycleâ€ is the theme of Keep America Beautifulâ€™s 2010 America Recycles Day (ARD), which takes place on November 15. Millions of Americans have pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and at work over the 13-year history of ARD, a nationally-recognized initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home, at work, and on the go.
Lewisburg Mayor Barbara Woods initiated the Lewisburg Curbside Recycling program and chaired a committee that included City Manager Eddie Fuller, Councilman Quinn Brandon, Marshall Co. Solid Waste Director Morgan Thomas, Public Works Director Kenny Ring, Jennifer Harris and Greg Lowe. The committee developed the program that evolved into Thursday and Friday recycling pickup in the city with containers provided for single-stream recycling waste.
The program has been a success by comparative standards but until everyone in Lewisburg is recycling the program will not be a complete success. That is why Mayor Woods is promoting America Recycles Day as an event to get more people in Lewisburg to use their recycle containers and rid their household and business recyclables.
â€œMost of the people I have spoken to who are recycling are just amazed at the amount of actual garbage left over,â€ said Mayor Woods. â€œI think some people just need a little push and they will see how easy and beneficial recycling can be.â€
Mayor Woods is urging all the city residents who are currently not recycling to start adding their recyclables to their containers on November 15. Then, on November 18 and 19, depending on where a resident lives, take that recycle container to the curb for pickup.
â€œGetting started is the key,â€ said Mayor Woods. â€œI would love to see us double the number of people recycling this year.â€

More Barks than Bites as 101 Dalmatians Comes to the Dixie Theatre Stage

Starting this Friday night, the Marshall County Community Theatre Kids Division brings an old Disney favorite to the Dixie Theatre stage with a musical adaptation of 101 Dalmatians.
First made famous by the animated Walt Disney classic in 1961, 101 Dalmatians has been made into movies, animated series for television and now it comes to the theatre stage. Under the direction of Allison Mulliniks, the MCCT Kids Division with its 38-member cast will bring this musical adaption to life. Assistant directors Kelsey Keny and Luke Collins add their expertise on the stage to the young cast of elementary and middle school performers who have been rehearsing for weeks to learn their parts and their songs. The musical play combines action and humor and a great score of songs under the musical direction of Doug May, another veteran of high school and community theatre performances at the Dixie.
101 Dalmatians has delighted audiences for generations with its cute and cuddly characters and one of the greatest villainous characters and names, Cruella De Vil. Emma Butt will be deliciously Cruella in the role of the infamous villain who plans to make an evil fashion statement from the large litter of puppies belonging to Pongo, played by Leremie Plott, and Perdita, played by Kelsie Lowe. Follow the plight of all those puppies and their parents as they attempt to escape the devious clutches of Cruella De Vil when the play opens this Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
You can catch all six performances at the Dixie Theatre on the Lewisburg square Oct. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31. The Sunday performances on Oct. 24 and 31 will be matinee performances beginning at 2 p.m. All other performances will hit the stage at 7:30 p.m.

The Lewisburg Rotary Club Miss Lewisburg Scholarship Pageant returns to Lewisburg Middle School auditorium on September 11 and promises to be the biggest and best yet with a new addition to the line-up â€“ Jr. Miss Lewisburg.
The theme of this yearâ€™s Miss Lewisburg Scholarship Pageant is â€œA Night of Starsâ€ and it is sure to hold true as the beautiful, smart and talented young ladies of Lewisburg, from ages K-2, 7th and 8th and 9th-12th, dazzle the crowd.

This year, Miss Lewisburg will earn a $1,000 scholarship with First Runner-Up earning a $600, Second Runner-up earning a $500 scholarship, Third Runner-Up earning a $300 scholarship and Fourth Runner-Up earning a $200 scholarship. It's the Battle of the Bands at Rock Creek Park

The 2nd Annual Battle at Rock Creek battle of the bands competition returns to Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg starting in August and leading up to the Goats, Music and More Festival on Oct. 8, 9 and 10, 2010.
Last year, twelve bands from across the region competed for the chance to play as an opening act at the Goats, Music and More Festival with the winner, Tyterope, of Chapel Hill, taking home the grand prize. This year, twelve more bands will compete for the Battle at Rock Creek title beginning with three bands on August 28 at Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg. The next three bands hit the stage on Sept. 4 followed by three more bands on Sept. 18 and the final three taking the stage on Sept. 25. All Battle at Rock Creek shows are free admission so just bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the music beginning at each night at 7 p.m. except for the Sept. 4 show.
On Sept. 4, a special Battle at Rock Creek Show will be held as Buddy Jewell will headline the event to help raise money for the Caney Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
Buddy Jewell burst onto the country music scene in 2003 when he won the coveted title of USA Network's first ever Nashville Star. A true crowd favorite from the premiere episode to the finale, TV audiences and critics alike fell in love with Buddy Jewell's gentility, enthusiasm and true musical passion.
Buddy's self-titled debut album on Columbia Records was certified gold, and garnered two back-to-back top five hits with â€œSweet Southern Comfortâ€ and â€œHelp Pour Out the Rain (Laceyâ€™s Song.)â€ Buddy Jewell debuted at 1 on the Top Country Album charts, and was recognized by the ACM, CMA and CMT Awards with multiple nominations.

One band winner from each night of competition will advance to the Oct. 7 show at Rock Creek Park for the semifinals. The two band winners from that night will open the Goats, Music and More Festival show on Friday, Oct. 9 for headliner Johnny Lee. Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band are best known for the smash hit song, â€œLookinâ€™ for Love,â€ the theme for the movie, â€œUrban Cowboy.â€
The winner of the Battle at Rock Creek will be announced following Johnny Leeâ€™s performance and will win $2,000 with the Runner-up band taking home $500.
The Battle at Rock Creek proved a fan favorite last year providing music in the park on a Saturday night for folks from Marshall and surrounding counties. The festival that began in honor of those famous fainting goats of Marshall County returns for its 8th year at Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg, TN and this yearâ€™s lineup of goat shows, musical entertainment and activities for the whole family promises to draw crowds from all across the nation and beyond.
The Goats, Music and More Festival has been honored by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event for October twice with its unique southern flavor, top-notch free musical entertainment, goat shows that celebrate fainting and Boer goats, barbecue, food of every description, arts and crafts and kids games and activities.
Coming to the stage this year will be acts to keep Rock Creek Park rockinâ€™ as Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band perform a free show Friday night. Johnny Lee is best known for the song that helped make the movie â€œUrban Cowboyâ€ a classic as â€œLookinâ€™ for Love in All the Wrong Placesâ€ hit the charts. He followed up "Lookin' For Love" with "One In A Million", which spent two weeks at number one. More number one singles during this time included - "Bet Your Heart On Me", "The Yellow Rose (a duet with Lane Brody)", & "You Could've Heard a Heart Break". Leeâ€™s string of Top 10 hits continued with "Pickin' Up Strangers," "Prisoner of Hope," "Be There for Me Baby," "Cherokee Fiddle," "Sounds Like Love," "Hey Bartender" and "Rollin' Lonely."
On Saturday night, the Kentucky Headhunters hit the stage for a free show at Rock Creek Park. The Headhunters will be firing up a brand of country, blues and rock and roll sure to be as tasty as a â€œslaw-burger, fries and a bottle of â€˜ski.â€ This October celebrates the 21st anniversary of the multi-platinum, Grammy award winning LP, "Pickin' On Nashville," The Kentucky Headhunters 1st release on Mercury records. The song, â€œDumas Walkerâ€ exploded up the charts and was soon followed by other big hits â€œWalk Softlyâ€ and â€œOh Lonesome Me.â€ The band has been a staple of southern rock, country and blues collections ever since and always a fan favorite when they play live.
The Music part of the festival kicks things off on Thursday, Oct. 7 when the semifinalists of the Battle at Rock Creek battle of the bands competition take the stage. The Battle at Rock Creek tunes up on August 28 at Rock Creek Park with three bands competing to make the semifinals on Oct. 7. The next three will compete on Sept. 4 followed by three more bands on Sept. 18 and the final set of three on Sept. 25. The four winners from those competition nights will compete on Oct. 7 with the two finalists opening the show for Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band on Friday, October 8 during the first-night finale of the Goats, Music and More Festival.
Saturday, various acts will take the stage at Rock Creek Park leading up to the second-night finale with the Kentucky Headhunters closing the show. All the musical events are free so bring a lawn chair and make room to dance the days and nights away.
Sunday at the festival will feature gospel music headed up by the local ministerial association of Marshall County.
The real stars of the festival take the show tents on Friday with Myotonic Goat Registry Goat Shows and the Southern Middle Tennessee Junior ABGA Boer Goat Show. Saturday hosts the World Championship Fainting Goat Show and the John D. Taylor Memorial Boer Goat Show. The Southern Middle Tennessee ABGA Boer Goat Show will close the goat shows on Sunday.
Vendors of all kinds will line the road at Rock Creek Park beginning Friday morning with anything and everything for which a festival could ask. There is always great food, arts and crafts, unique products of all kinds and more.

The 2nd Annual Marshall County Technology & Energy Fair is coming to the Marshall County High School in Lewisburg on May 27, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This year, the event promises to bring seminars and booths with lots of information on the latest in technology and energy innovations and how the two tools can help your home, office or business.
The Marshall County Joint Economic and Community Development Board is sponsoring the event through its Technology Committee. The committee has been working feverishly over the past several weeks to come up with vendors and instructors on technology and energy and has come up with a great line up of information for the whole family, as well as entrepreneurs and local businesses.
“This will be a great opportunity for parents to come and learn what their children already know about the latest in technology,” said Fair Director Suzanne Ingram. “They will also be able to see the state-of-the-art technology being utilized by their children in the classrooms of Marshall County.”

The Marshall County Imagination Library has teamed up with Saddle Creek Golf Course and Roberts Toyota to offer a 2010 Toyota Camry LE for any golfer who hits a hole-in-one while playing his or her rounds on May 29. The benefits go to help the Marshall County Imagination Library continue to provide free books to children in Marshall County from birth to age 5.
The Marshall County Imagination Library has been helping to bring one free book a month to almost 1,000 children in Marshall County under the age of 5. These books are mailed to the child directly and help each child the opportunity to get a head start on reading and learning before kindergarten.
The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library helps to pay half the cost of each book but it is up to the MCIL to come up with the rest. The MCIL continues to receive donations from citizens and businesses in Marshall County; but as more kids sign up, more funding is always needed to insure every child in Marshall County under the age of 5 gets a free book each month.
Thanks to Eddie and Donna Roberts of Saddle Creek Golf Course and Roberts Toyota, the MCIL will host a Hole-in-One competition at Saddle Creek Golf Course on May 29. Golfers that day can pay just $10 for a chance to win a 2010 Toyota Camry LE with a hole-in-one at a specific par three hole. Mulligans will also be offered for $10 each up to a limit of three chances.

String Fling IV Acoustic Music Festival announces awesome lineup

What started in Gary Francis’ backyard has grown to become an acoustic musical festival worthy of the fairgrounds of Nashville; and this May 15, String Fling IV comes to Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg with a lineup of musical talent sure to get toes to tapping.
Gary Francis of Teledyne in Lewisburg has been playing bluegrass music for several years. Along the way, he made a few friends in the business and decided to host a “little” festival in his backyard in Chapel Hill. In just three years, the music festival grew to over 400 people cramming into the field behind his house to hear some great bluegrass and other acoustic music.
So, Francis and his friend, Bruce Keedy, of Tennessee Acoustic Music, got with the City of Lewisburg to bring the festival to the stage at Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg. The result is the return of String Fling on a bigger stage and with yet another outstanding lineup of musicians and songwriters.
“This is a fantastic lineup,” said Francis. “Lewisburg should be very proud to have these talented performers coming to their stage.”
String Fling IV will kick it off on May 15, 2010 at Rock Creek Park beginning at 1 p.m. and playing through to 9 p.m. There will be food and baked goods provided by the Lewisburg Animal Shelter Association to benefit the Lewisburg Animal Shelter and more good music than you can shake a stick at. And admission to the festival is free.
Performers include songwriter Irene Kelly who has penned hits with Alan Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Ricky Scaggs, Trisha Yearwood, Bill Anderson and many more.
Donna Ulisse has been songwriting and recording since moving to Nashville in the early 1980s and has performed on “Nashville Now”, “Hee-Haw”, “Hot Country Nights” and more. Along with her band, the Poor Mountain Boys, this recording artist is hitting her stride with a new CD called “Walk This Mountain Down.”
Flashpoint combines more than 30 years of music experience and talent into one package of bluegrass music that calls to mind the legendary Flatt & Scruggs or Bill Monroe. The band performs all across the country and is sure to enjoy the atmosphere at Rock Creek Park on May 15.
Jay Clark is a singer/songwriter with 3 CDs to his credit. His off-beat brand of country has made him a hit wherever he has played and his performances are getting much play on YouTube including his recent performance on “Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s.”
Kenny and Amanda Smith made their name in bluegrass by winning the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist Award in 2003. Five records later, the duo has earned both Grammy and Dove Nominations for their gospel song “Tell Someone” and they continue to tour the country as one of the top bluegrass and gospel performers today.
Other performers set to take the stage are Jim Reynolds and Gemstone of Chapel Hill who released their first CD this year, Sweet Diezel of Canada, Highland Rim, Ronnie Fruge`, Markham Brown, Josh Glover, Greg Jones, Scott Phagley, Roam County Radio and Rank Strangers.
So, bring your lawn chairs and your dancing shoes and head to Rock Creek Park in Lewisburg, Tennessee for a day of good music and fun for the whole family. Admission is free.

Teledyne Celebrates its Employee Wellness Program

Teledyne is currently in its third straight year of growth but there is one area where growth is shrinking – waistlines.
Thanks to a new fitness center and an employee wellness program, Teledyne is not only keeping people working, but they are also working out. And to celebrate, Teledyne held a Wellness Fair for its employees on Thursday, April 15 with food, music, door prizes and a special guest, Liz Young, of the Biggest Loser television show, from Chapel Hill.
Since the show, Young has been doing speaking engagements and holding boot camps with fellow Biggest Loser contestant Tracy Yukych all over the country; and she was very happy to talk to some folks from back home.
“It is rare to speak to people from my own community,” Young said.
Young was on hand to rib some employees for enjoying too many ribs at the Wellness Fair, to give a quick exercise boot camp and to hand out prizes to the winners of the Teledyne Biggest Loser Competition.
“Teledyne really rolled out the red carpet for your exercise facility,” Young told the Teledyne employees. “Take advantage of this great facility.”
The Teledyne Fitness Center was the culmination of an ongoing effort by the company to implement wellness to its employees. Each year, Vanderbilt comes to Teledyne to conduct health screenings and the company has had a Weight Watchers program for the past three years. Teledyne VP Norm Wolstein approached HR Director John Boutwell about taking their wellness program up another level when he noticed his own waistline heading in the wrong direction.
“We understand how tough it is to balance your work and personal lives,” said Wolstein. “We wanted to provide you a place to help you do that.”
Norm has lost around 50lbs since taking part in the wellness program and plans to win next year’s Teledyne Biggest Loser contest.
The Teledyne Fitness Center is state of the art with elliptical machines, weights, a yoga/dance studio and more. It is open to employees from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are even locker rooms with showers for employees who use the facility during their breaks. Boutwell turned to his friend, Andy Harvey of Harvey’s Gym to help locate the equipment and make the facility a real fitness center for Teledyne employees.
The Teledyne cafeteria has even gotten into the act by providing healthier choices in food.
Diane Nasser is serving as the Fitness Director for Teledyne and comes from the Dayani Wellness Center of Vanderbilt. She works with employees on their fitness routines and their yoga classes.
“This is an important program for not only the health of employees but for their morale,” Nasser said. “Using the exercise room and taking part in yoga classes here at Teledyne really pulls the employees together.”
The Teledyne Wellness Fair was a fun event for all the employees and their guests with booths set up by AFLAC, Rejuvenate of Jubilee Hills and Weight Watchers. Door prizes and drawings were held including a great spa treatment day at Rejuvenate of Jubilee Hills located on Cornersville Road.
“We think this is great,” said Flo (Coach Flo) Grabowski of AFLAC. “And as we always say, healthier employees make for more productive employees.”
With Marshall County’s own Nora Mills Band performing, employees enjoyed a nice BBQ in the sunshine before announcing the winners of the Teledyne Biggest Loser contest. Angie Davis took home first place by losing 13 percent body fat followed by Brenda Lindley in second and a tie for third between Nela Patel and Susan Garten. Each received a special gift from Teledyne and a word of encouragement from Young.
As Teledyne continues to grow and provide a stable employer for Marshall County, the company reminds us that employees are the key to success by giving back to its people with its fitness center and wellness program.

BREDESEN ANNOUNCES JOB CREATION PLAN FOR MARSHALL COUNTY
EFFORT TO COMBAT UNEMPLOYMENT TARGETS COUNTY WITH HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced a plan to reduce unemployment in Marshall County by putting up to 175 people back to work using federal dollars available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Marshall County has had the state’s highest unemployment rate – 19.1 percent in February – for the past three months and includes 2,330 currently unemployed residents.

“This jobs package will put people back to work and provide some much needed assistance to these residents who are feeling the effects of this economic downturn,” said Bredesen. “One of the primary goals of the Recovery Act is to put people back to work, and I’m glad the state can bring this assistance to Marshall County residents during these tough times.”

The 175 positions include government and private sector employment opportunities that will be funded through September 2010 by Recovery Act dollars allocated to the Tennessee Department of Human Services. These positions include 50 highway maintenance worker positions within the Tennessee Department of Transportation and 125 positions that will be filled primarily by private sector companies seeking to hire additional staff.

Residents of Marshall County must meet certain income and asset requirements to be eligible for these positions. To be eligible, a family’s income cannot be greater than 133 percent of the federal poverty level ($2,030/month for a family of three; $2,444/month for a family of four), and their liquid resources cannot exceed $2,000. In addition, residents must have a child younger than 18-years old living in their household.
A job fair for Marshall County residents will be held Tuesday, April 20 at the Lewisburg Recreation Center located at 1551 Mooresville Highway from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Those interested in the job creation program who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to attend the job fair where they will have the opportunity view a list of available positions and complete an application for employment.
The Marshall County jobs package is similar to the program announced in May 2009 for Perry County, which, at the time, had the state’s highest rate of unemployment. More than 400 unemployed individuals found jobs as a result of that effort. At the Perry County announcement, Bredesen stated his desire to make this a model that could be implemented in other high unemployment counties and subsequently announced similar programs in Lauderdale and Hancock counties.

“The goal of this effort is to use Recovery Act funds to provide assistance where it’s needed most, Bredesen said. “Our state’s economy continues to suffer and thousands of Tennesseans are struggling. We’ll continue look for creative ways to assist counties with high rates of unemployment.”

Lewisburg, Tenn – Owners of small, rural businesses and minority and women owned businesses are invited to attend one-on-one counseling sessions on Tuesday, April 20th in Lewisburg, TN. Business owners will learn about resources that will help grow and sustain their business, work with the government, and gain knowledge in financing. Each meeting will be between 30 and 45 minutes. World’s Oldest and Largest Candle Maker Begins Manufacturing in Lewisburg

For 155 years, Will & Baumer has been the name to trust in religious candle manufacturing and the company begins a new era by bringing its rich tradition in candle making to Lewisburg, TN.
On February 18, 2010, Will & Baumer officially opened the doors to its new facility in the Lewisburg Business Park with a grand opening ceremony to celebrate its move from Syracuse, NY to Lewisburg. The Will & Baumer Candle Company broke ground on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in the Lewisburg Business Park with a brief ceremony featuring officials from Lewisburg and Marshall County, the State ECD Department, TVA and parent company Autom Church Supply. The grand opening ceremony welcomed those same visitors as well as employees from Syracuse and Lewisburg, Will & Baumer President Jim Fields and Regional Sales Manager/Co-owner Marshall Ciccone.
The Will & Baumer Candle Company has been in business manufacturing candles for churches all around the world for 155 years in Syracuse, New York. Autom Church Supply acquired the company and began making plans to construct a facility for Will & Baumer in the Lewisburg Business Park next to the Autom Church Supply distribution and call center that has been up and running for two years following its move to Lewisburg from Phoenix, AZ.
“We are constantly amazed by the hospitality and reception we receive each time we come to Lewisburg,” said Tom DiGiovanni, president of Autom Church Supply. “We have been to several places and nowhere have we been treated better than here in Lewisburg, Tennessee. We appreciate so much all the support provided by the State of Tennessee Economic and Community Development Department and the work they have done to help make these projects such a success.”
Construction for the $1.3 million project began the end of July and production in the facility began the first of February 2010. John Chunn of Truette Construction in Lewisburg oversaw the construction of the 10,000 sq. ft. facility that will house 6-8 employees in its first year of operation and grow to 13-19 employees by 2012 with salaries ranging from $50,000 per year to jobs paying $8.50 per hour.
“We have found a new home and a great opportunity here in Tennessee,” said President Jim Fields. “The people here have been very welcoming to our company and its people.”
Three employees made the move to Lewisburg from Syracuse to continue working for Will & Baumer and its newest employees from Marshall County. The Syracuse natives have the made the transition to Lewisburg to maintain their connection to the company and to insure it continues its strong tradition in Lewisburg. The tradition of the company in the candle making industry and the family-feel of the business and its owners has made it a perfect fit for the Lewisburg Business Park.
“We cannot say enough good things about the relationship we have built together with the people of Autom and Will & Baumer,” said Lewisburg ECD Director Terry Wallace. “They have been a pleasure to work with and have proven to be a tremendous asset to the Lewisburg Business Park and the City of Lewisburg.”

The South Central Tennessee Workforce Board and Columbia State Community College is presenting a series of entrepreneurial classes at the CSCC-Lewisburg campus beginning Tuesday, January 26.
There will be 8 sessions offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. covering the following topics – Which Business to Start, Marketing, Accounting, Legal Structure, Cash Flow, Pricing the Product, Challenges and Business Plan Development. There will be two sessions each week and each session will be taught by an expert on the subject. The sessions will be very informative and very interactive.

TVA Working with Local Industries to Keep Jobs Here

Maintaining employment is not only important to local industries and local government, it is equally important to the Tennessee Valley Authority who recently unveiled a reward program to qualifying industries in several targeted sectors for keeping jobs right where they are now.
Within its seven-state region, TVA launched a $40 million campaign in October to encourage existing businesses to make investments and maintain production in the area. The TVA Valley Investment Initiative offers cash incentives for plant investments, even when they only maintain, rather than expand, overall employment. And in Lewisburg, that means there are 12 local industries who may qualify to save 4-12 percent on their utility bill thanks to their commitment to maintain or expand employment in their current facilities over the next five years.
To qualify for the program, industries must be existing TVA customers, use a minimum of 250kW peak monthly demand, have a minimum of 25 full-time employees, have no plans to reduce employment by 50 percent over the next five years and be financially sound. Some of the local industries who qualify for the VII include Smurfit Stone, Southern Carton, Cosmolab, Trison Coatings, Teledyne, Moon Products, Nichirin, ICP and Lewisburg Printing Company.
Deborah Cameron, TVA Economic Development Project Manager for the Middle Tennessee Region, came to Lewisburg on Tuesday to speak with some of those qualifying industries about the Valley Investment Initiative and how the program can benefit them.
“We are seeing a great deal of interest in the program,” Cameron said. “It is a very unique program you won’t see from other power utilities across the country.”
Cameron explained how TVA began discussing ways to assist economic development in their region with the current economic downturn approaching. Cameron said TVA realized most of the industries in areas such as Lewisburg were branch plants that faced possible consolidation and movement out of the region. So, TVA developed the TVA Valley Investment Initiative as a reward program for industries in the region who commit to keeping their doors open and their workers working. The program is also an argument against those parent companies that are looking to close and consolidate local industries and move them out of the TVA region.
“If they (local industries) need evidence on the program and the cost savings it will mean for their facility to show to their parent company, we can do that for them,” Cameron said. “It is my job to be their advocate.”
Industries that qualify and want to participate in the program in order to receive their power bill credits from TVA must fill out an application, undergo an evaluation by TVA and then see their savings on their monthly utility bills based on capital investment, jobs created or retained, wages paid, energy efficiency and load factor. The savings can be substantial averaging between 4 and 12 percent.
Local power distributors such as Lewisburg Electric System appreciate the program as well. LES President Richard Turner attended the Tuesday meeting to hear more from TVA about the program.
“TVA has tried to assist industries through rates and I think they have realized this is a better way,” Turner said. “I think it’s a good program and I am proud it’s out.”
The meeting Tuesday morning at Lewisburg City Hall was arranged by Lewisburg ECD Director Terry Wallace and ECD Specialist Lisa Jackson so that qualifying industries in Lewisburg could get a better understanding of the program and how to apply.
“We a very happy to see that TVA is developing ways to assist our local industries during this turbulent economic period,” Wallace said. “We need to utilize everything we can here in Marshall County to try and stabilize and eventually turn around our unemployment figures.”
Job creation remains a focal point for the Lewisburg ECD office; but across the country as well as here in Tennessee, more focus is being placed on job retention. The TVA Valley Investment Initiative is only one program to help local industries keep their workers working in Tennessee and Marshall County.

TVA Talks with Local Retailers about Improving Business

Using data, statistics and estimations, around 25 local business and community leaders came to the Lewisburg Recreation Center Tuesday night to discuss ways existing retailers can improve their customer base and increase their sales.
Chuck Marquis, Project Manager for Business Resources for the Tennessee Valley Authority, presented the data along with techniques for retailers looking to improve their bottom lines. Economic Development is part of what TVA does for its seven-state region and Marquis put together a program taken from other marketing gurus, such as Jon Schallert, and data collected by Claritas, a nationally recognized source of accurate, up-to-date demographic data and target marketing research information about the population, consumer behavior, consumer spending, market segments, households and businesses within any specific geographic target market area in the United States.
Marquis put together data from Claritas about Lewisburg using a drive-time of 16 miles that created a trade area for local retailers to examine and discuss. The trade area demonstrated the types of consumers that live within the region, their spending habits and their lifestyles. The information also showed the areas in which leakage, or money being spent on goods and services outside Marshall County, is occurring, as well as areas of surplus, or money being spent inside Marshall County from people who live outside the county.
For many people, pouring over data can be overwhelming and a perceived waste of time and energy. Marquis explained how such data can be important for not only those looking to start a business, but also for those already in business. By understanding the customers in a trade area, businesses can better develop strategies to market to those customers, from better marketing techniques to making changes in a stores appearance or items offered.
Looking at the data on Lewisburg’s trade area, a 16-mile radius around the intersection of Nashville Highway and Ellington Parkway, there is an estimated $169 million in potential retail sales not being realized. According to the Claritas data, there was an estimated $351 million in retail sales in the area in 2009 but there was a retail demand of $520 million. That means there is a great deal of money being spent by local residents shopping outside the county on items and services that are offered locally.
The top merchandise items in which retail leakage is occurring in Marshall County are cars, trucks and power transmissions, meals and snacks, groceries and other food, drugs, health and beauty aids, women’s juniors and misses’ wear, men’s wear and computer hardware/software supplies. Most if not all of the items in which leakage is occurring are offered by Lewisburg retailers and the items that are not offered create what is called a “retail gap.” Filling a retail gap means recruiting or encouraging businesses that offer goods or services not currently found in Lewisburg stores; but for those local businesses in which those goods and services are already offered, having leakage means figuring out why people are not buying locally and how to get them to start.
One area in which there is a surplus in Lewisburg is lawn/garden/farm equipment and supply. There is around $28 million in retail sales coming into Marshall County from outside the county and this in an area where Lewisburg may have found a niche on which to build more retail sales. By indentifying those out-of-county customers of lawn, garden and farm equipment supplies, a campaign to encourage them to shop for other items can be created. This idea is only one that came from the presentation Tuesday night.
The other idea came from a discussion on marketing and it is a buzzword called - networking. The internet and email marketing has proven an inexpensive and affective means of modern marketing. There are websites that offer free services to help market small businesses to a wider audience and sending out emails to consumers directly has also proven to be beneficial for many small businesses. The problem for most small business owners is time and a lack of knowledge on how to get it started. Marquis provided those local retailers at the meeting Tuesday night a few ideas on how to get such marketing campaigns up and running along with websites that can assist those less tech-savvy small business owners. By using the internet as a marketing tool, local small business owners can not only attract new customers, but they can also stay connected with existing customers, as well as other local businesses in the area. Trading ideas and information and collaborating on marketing can become a very valuable tool for small businesses looking to expand their customer base and annual sales.

Carriage rides will begin at 7:00 on the square where you can trot on up to A Victorian Melody's for their open house and refreshments.

Frosty and Rudolph will be making an appearance for all the children to enjoy.

On Saturday Dec. 5th, the children can enjoy Story Time with Frosty and Rudolph at 11:00 at A Victorian Meloday on the front porch, and then go have their picture made with Santa at the Chamber of Commerce building located just off the square. Just follow the reindeer hoof prints from the square.

The crowning of our festival Queen- Imogene Ledford, will be held in the Dixie at 1:00.

The Marshall County Art Guild will be set up in the Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church showing and selling some of their fine artwork.

At 2:00 the parade will be coming through town and the activities will continue for the children on the square.

Rotary Christmas Parade to Celebrate “Christmas Memories”

One of the great traditions of the holiday season returns this year with the Lewisburg Rotary Club Christmas Parade.
This year’s theme for the Lewisburg Rotary Club Christmas Parade will be “Christmas Memories” and all entries will display their favorite variations on that theme to make for yet another wonderful Christmas parade.
“This is not a fundraiser for Rotary,” said Parade Chair Peggy Hubbard. “This is just one of the many public service events the Lewisburg Rotary Club provides to the community and it is certainly on the year’s favorites.”
The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on December 5, 2009 starting at the usual parade route from Tiger Boulevard, East onto West Commerce toward the Lewisburg Square. A slight change in the parade route will take place on the square with wheeled vehicles continuing straight onto East Commerce and all floats turning onto 1st Avenue to wind up at Rock Creek Park where parents can pick up their children. Horse riders will follow the floats passed Rock Creek Park and end up behind the Lewisburg Gas Department.
The Lewisburg Rotary Club is expected another great turnout of floats, vehicles and horse riders for this year’s event. Participants are reminded that anyone operating a motorized vehicle, including ATV’s, must have a valid driver’s license. All entries in the parade must be decorated appropriately with the theme, “Christmas Memories” and the one and only Santa Claus will make his grand appearance once again.
Everyone is invited to take part in the parade or be part of the crowd ready to enjoy the Lewisburg Rotary Club “Christmas Memories” Christmas parade on December 5, 2009 at 2 p.m.
